Monastery of São Vicente de Fora
Location: Lisboa, Portugal
Description
One of Lisbon's grandest monasteries, perched above Alfama, São Vicente de Fora is lined with thousands of baroque azulejo tiles — including a playful series illustrating La Fontaine's fables that kids can hunt for panel by panel. Families can peek into a medieval cistern, visit the Royal Pantheon where Portugal's last kings and queens of the Bragança dynasty are buried, and climb to the rooftop terrace for one of the best panoramic views over the city and the Tagus. Allow about an hour; the visit involves plenty of stairs, so it suits walking kids better than strollers.
