National Palace of Ajuda
Location: Lisboa, Portugal
Description
The National Palace of Ajuda was the last home of Portugal's royal family, and it still looks as if the king might walk back in: a real Throne Room, a glittering Grand Ballroom, a state dining hall set for a banquet, and dozens of rooms full of royal furniture, tapestries and curiosities. Kids enjoy spotting the dual thrones, painted ceilings and the Winter Garden with its marble fountain. The visit covers two upper floors reached by grand staircases, so a baby carrier beats a stroller; allow about 1-1.5 hours. The Royal Treasure Museum with the Portuguese crown jewels is in the same building but requires a separate ticket.
